Swedish Mammography Cohort Clinical
A clinical examination of a subcohort of SMC women living in Uppsala started in 2003. The examination includes collection of clinical samples and additional information. The first cycle of examination did finish in year 2009 and the cycle of re-examination started in year 2013.
From 2003 through 2009, 8,311 women below age 85 years and living in the town of Uppsala received a diet, lifestyle, and physical activity questionnaire with an invitation to participate in a health examination. Sixty-five percent of the invited participants completed the questionnaire and 61% participated in the health examination that included weight, height, waist, hip, and blood pressure measurements, and a dual energy X-ray absorptiometry (DEXA) scan. Samples of fasting blood, urine, and adipose tissue were also collected at the health exam.
A subset of these women completed an additional FFQ and a physical activity questionnaire and wore a physical activity monitor and completed a 7-day activity record. A second subset of women completed a questionnaire on sun exposure in conjunction with a blood sample collected both during winter and summer months.
A second health examination, biological sample collection, and diet and lifestyle questionnaire, is ongoing for this clinical subcohort since November 2013.
From March 2012 to March 2013, 1,030 women in the SMC over age 85 years and living in Uppsala County received an invitation letter to participate in a validated cognitive test phone interview, complete a FFQ, and receive a home health examination. The home health examination included weight, height, waist, hip, and blood pressure measurements, blood, urine, adipose tissue, and fecal sample collection, a physical function test, and the Mini Mental State Examination (MMSE).
