Publication Policy

  • For publication of scientific articles and other dissemination of results based on data and/or samples from the infrastructure, the infrastructure must be acknowledged by stating the infrastructure name and the Swedish Research Council grant numbers 2017-00644 and 2021-00160. For scientific articles, this should be included under the heading “Acknowledgement” or an equivalent section. This obligation applies for infrastructure staff and other users of the infrastructure. Example formulation:

"We acknowledge SIMPLER for the provisioning of facilities and experimental support, and we would like to thank [x, y and z] for assistance. SIMPLER receives funding from the Swedish Research Council under the grant no. 2017-00644 and 2021-00160."

  • If you have used any of the available -omics data, you must refer to the Swedish Research Council grant no. 2017-06100 and 2021-00160 and Stiftelsen Olle Engkvist Byggmästare. Example formulation:

"We acknowledge SIMPLER for the provisioning of facilities and experimental support, and we would like to thank [x, y and z] for assistance. SIMPLER receives funding from the Swedish Research Council under the grant no. 2017-00644 and 2021-00160. Provision of -omics data was supported by Swedish Research Council grant no. 2017-06100 and Stiftelsen Olle Engkvist Byggmästare."

  • Similarly, the host of the computational resources must be acknowledged. Since January 1, 2023, the host is National Academic Infrastructure for Supercomputing in Sweden, NAISS. Example formulation:

"The computations/data handling/[SIMILAR] were/was enabled by resources in project [SIMP YYYY/AAA] provided by the National Academic Infrastructure for Supercomputing in Sweden (NAISS) at Uppsala Multidisciplinary Center for Advanced Computational Science (UPPMAX), partially funded by the Swedish Research Council through grant agreement no. 2022-06725."

  • SIMPLER is partially financed by the Swedish Research Council, and they have an Open Access publishing policy. Therefore publication of research results using SIMPLER data must be made available as Open Access immediately upon publication. Check the Swedish Research Council’s guidelines for publication with Open Access, and/or your funding agency.

  • Some journals require the publication of data in conjunction with publication of the article. This requirement is not in accordance with the general data protection regulation (GDPR) and thus cannot be fulfilled. Users are obliged to inform the journal about this, and can for example state, "Data are available from SIMPLER (www.simpler4health.se) for researchers who meet the data access criteria that include an ethical approval from a valid Swedish ethical review board and an approved data access application."

  • There is no general demand from the director of SIMPLER nor the Steering Committee of SIMPLER for co-authorship on publications that include data from SIMPLER. Co-authorship can be discussed if the people concerned have significantly contributed to the publication, i.e. with their knowledge of the cohorts; see the Vancouver rules.

If rules are violated, the Steering Committee of SIMPLER will decide on which action to take. The gravity of the infringement determines action, which may be a reminder to follow the rules, or a suspension from the infrastructure and data access.
