Swedish Mammography Cohort Subcohorts
A clinical examination of women in the SMC living in Uppsala was conducted between 2003 and 2009. The cycle of re-examination for this group started in 2015 and is ongoing. For women living in Västerås, a clinical examination was conducted between 2010 and 2019. The examination includes collection of clinical samples and additional information.
Swedish Mammography Cohort Clinical Uppsala (SMCC Uppsala)
From 2003 through to 2009, participants in SMC below the age of 85 and living in the town of Uppsala were randomly selected and invited to participate in a subcohort. Of the 8,311 invited women, 65 % answered the received diet, lifestyle, and physical-activity questionnaire and 60 %, 5,032 women, participated in the health examination. Samples are available for 5,022 women. The health examination included weight, height, waist, hip, and blood pressure measurements, as well as a body composition measurement using a dual energy X-ray absorptiometry (DXA) scan. Samples of fasting blood and urine in addition to adipose tissue were also collected at the health exam.
A subset of the women visiting the clinic completed additional food and physical activity questionnaires. Furthermore, they wore physical activity monitors and completed a 7-day activity record. A second subset of women who visited the clinic completed a questionnaire on sun exposure in conjunction with a blood sample collected both during winter and summer months.
A second round of health examination which includes biological sample collection (blood, urine, adipose tissue, and faeces) and a diet and lifestyle questionnaire has been ongoing for this subcohort since January 2015. The second stage also includes a 1-day food diary and a cognitive interview.
Home health examination Uppsala
From March 2012 to March 2013, 1,030 women in SMC over the age of 85 and living in Uppsala County received an invitation to participate in a validated cognitive-test phone interview, complete a food frequency questionnaire, and receive a home health examination. 305 women,
29 %, were examined in their homes. The examination included taking weight, height, waist, hip, and blood pressure measurements, a physical function test, and the Mini Mental State Examination (MMSE). Blood, urine, adipose tissue, and fecal samples were also collected.
Swedish Mammography Cohort Clinical Västerås (SMCC Västerås)
Between 2010 and 2019, women in SMC living in the county of Västmanland received a diet, health, and lifestyle questionnaire as well as a 1-day food diary, along with an invitation to participate in a health examination. During the 9 years, a total of 2,630 women visited the clinic in Västerås, of which 1,062 were living with a man participating in the male subcohort of COSM. The health examination included weight, height, waist, hip, blood pressure measurements, and body composition measurements using a bio-electrical impedance scale (Tanita). Samples of fasting blood, urine, fecal samples, and adipose tissue were also collected at the health exam.
A second stage of testing started in October 2023, following the same procedure as the first stage, but adding a cognitive interview and a DEXA scan for all participants at their visit.
